Thiess secures contract for Bowen Basin mine development in Australia

30 November 2012Australian construction, mining and services contractor Thiess will provide construction services for the Caval Ridge Mine Project in the Bowen Basin in Central Queensland.

The scope of services includes construction of a coal preparation plant (CPP), part of the coal handling and preparation plant (CHPP), and a rail loop and holding roads.

The two new contracts are part of the coal mining project being developed by the BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) and are worth A$220m ($230.3m).

BMA’s Caval Ridge project, spread across 6,800ha, comprises a hard coking coal mine and a coal handling and preparation plant.

CHPP construction, delivered by Thiess’ specialist industrial projects team, is estimated to cost approximately $125m, while the rail loop and holding roads are projected to cost around $95m.

Thiess managing director Bruce Munro said that the company has already begun work on major site preparation and drainage works at Caval Ridge.

“The addition of the CHPP and rail facilities further showcases our offering to clients,” Munro added.

Under the rail contract, Thiess will offer services for earthworks and excavation. The company will undertake track laying and installation of signaling, overhead power and communications systems at a later date.

Construction at the Caval Ridge project commenced in January 2012 and the first coal from the mine is expected in 2014.
